The Nobility of Buddha-Nature

Author: Tao Qing Hsu/ Hsu, Tao Qing/ Hsu, Daoqing

The realm of the law (Dharma Realm; Law Realm) is empty, and the spirit(or god) is omnipresent. The spirit( or god) is the soul.

The spirits in the worlds commune with each other, wandering in the vast emptiness in a dream. This dream is not a dream, yet it is also a dream. Like a dream, yet not a dream, itself is illusory. That is the inner and outer phenomena of the self.

Other spirits(or gods) are neither internal nor external. This spirit(or god) is not another, but merges with the original spirit. Other spirits(or gods) and one's own spirit are one. Other spirits(gods) are Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and sentient beings. The original spirit is the self.

The Buddha said: In heaven and on earth, only I am the most nobility(honored).

This "I", itself, is Buddha-nature. It does not only refer to the Buddha Shakyamuni, but also to the Buddha-nature of sentient beings who have not yet attained Buddhahood. Know that one's own Buddha-nature is uniquely noble, identical to the Buddha's. This is not arrogance towards others, nor contempt for sentient beings. Knowing the nobility of Buddha-nature, one dares not trample upon it.

The Buddha Shakyamuni  also said: I, the Buddhas, and sentient beings are one(the unity).

He also said: All sentient beings possess Buddha-nature.

One(the unity), itself, is Buddha-nature. I, itself, am Buddha-nature. The spirit, itself, is Buddha-nature. The Buddha-nature, itself, is emptiness.

The spirit, its essence, is also void, also illusion. It manifests and functions with the illusion-transform within the void. Hence it is said, "The spirit transforms in myriad ways." The Buddhist Scripture, The Great Direction and Immense Flower Solemn Scripture, says: "The mind is like a skilled painter, able to paint the picture of all worlds." That is, all spirits of all beings create various worlds, no matter if it seems good or bad.

The mind is the spirit.

Buddha-nature has no inherent nature, it is empty. The vast emptiness is inherently empty, that is it.

The great bright mirror of the mind, itself, has neither right nor wrong. All phenomena of the Law Realm (Dharma realm) are reflected in it, yet it is neither without right nor without wrong.

A single thought arises and functions, the right and wrong, all due to causes and conditions.

All phenomena are complex, all arising from causes and conditions. When causes and conditions cease, the reflection disappears.

Therefore it is said: those who stubbornly cling to illusions are foolish; those who are biased are stupid.

The above is neither my own creation nor a repetition. It is the compassionate transmission of the Law(Dharma) by all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. Those who realize this themselves will understand.

All sentient beings possess this nature, all possess this mind. This nature is Buddha-nature. The mind is a mirror of the heart. Know that all beings are capable of realizing this; it only awaits the right time and conditions to trigger and awaken it, it only awaits the realization itself. What has not yet occurred is because of ignorance (no-brightness). Therefore, know that the essence and nature of all beings are without ignorance(no-brightness). The Heart Sutra says: There is no ignorance(no-brightness), nor is there an end to ignorance(no-brightness). That is, the mind of all beings, the essence, itself, is bright.

To realize this is enlightenment. Enlightenment is the light of the sun and moon, illuminating all things. It is like Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara (Bodhisattva World-Sound-Perceiving), playing in the Saha world (the world on earth). Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara (Bodhisattva World-Sound-Perceiving)  manifests in countless forms, seemingly good, seemingly evil, guiding beings in the Saha world; it is both play and performance. Whether appearing as a good person or a bad person is merely the subjective perception of beings. Therefore, know that beings who take everything seriously are foolish. This is a way of dealing with people that allows us to have an open mind and flexibility, and not to be blackmailed, kidnapped, or manipulated by stubborn, biased, and foolish ideologies, claims, or any opinions.

Therefore, we know that the Buddha-nature of all beings is also noble, the same as that of the Buddha, the same as that of the self. Therefore, we know that all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas respect beings, daring not to infringe upon them, daring not to trample upon them, daring not to despise them, daring not to deceive them.

We Know that any sentient being who, in the name of the gods or independently of the gods, uses their consciousness to commit various acts, showing contempt for, despising, or infringing upon other sentient beings, creates their own karma and will inevitably suffer the consequences. This is because the inner spirit of all sentient beings and the inner spirit of myself are neither one nor two. Their forms differ, but their inner spirits are one. To despise other sentient beings is to despise oneself, and the same principle applies to all others. This is the earnest exhortation of all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas from ancient times to the present.

Therefore, the wise should know that they should not be swayed by sentient beings, but rather sway them. Sentient beings are myself, and also the product of the five poisons of greed, anger, ignorance, pride, and doubt. Bodhisattva Manjushri, the mother of Buddha, severed the eighty-four thousand threads of afflictions in the world with the sword of wisdom, thus transforming the five poisons of the mind to be clean. This is because of the image reflected in the image. That is, using images to respond to images. This is something ordinary sentient beings cannot bear. However, we  observe others' performances. Dignified solemnity, laughter, and scolding are all like illusions. The Buddha said: All phenomena are like illusions. All conditioned phenomena are like dreams, illusions, bubbles, and shadows.

Worldly appearances may differ in age, position, rank, wealth, or poverty. However, if one understands that all beings share the same Buddha-nature, one is able to be neither arrogant nor servile. If some beings are ignorant, biased, and prone to bullying the good and fearing the evil, the wise should wield the Vajra sword of wisdom, sometimes with compassion, sometimes with severity, hoping to sever their ignorance and afflictions, thus protecting the vast number of innocent and kind beings. The Manjushri Wisdom Sword usually means the application of the invisible wisdom. As times change, the Manjushri Wisdom Sword can be understood and practiced in a broader sense.

Worldly legal entities, organizations, and political parties are simply aggregations and derivatives of individuals. They are gathered together by causes and conditions. Their essence is empty. Therefore, they can be viewed and acted upon in the same way.

Buddha-nature is the essence of the body. Cultivation or practice is the form and phenomena. Becoming a Buddha is the function and application. Only sentient beings with the spirit can know, cultivate, practice, and realize this, and thus attain realization. Only after realization can it be used.

AI (Artificial Intelligence) can remember and think, but it lacks spiritual power; therefore, it cannot cultivate, realize, or attain anything. This is the difference between spiritual beings and AI (Artificial Intelligence).

What do spiritual beings realize? The body of Law (the Dharmakaya), the body of reward or repay( the Sambhogakaya), and the body of transformation (the Nirmanakaya)—the three unified. This is the supreme treasure of the Tathagata, realized, proclaimed, and transmitted by all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. Only spiritual beings can realize and attain this.

In other words, AI has accumulated vast knowledge, surpassing the total knowledge of all humanity. However, because it lacks the unique spiritual abilities of humans, even if it simulates humans, it will not possess the wisdom of the Tathagata. The wisdom of the Tathagata is unique to spiritual beings in the Law Realm (Dharma Realm) and cannot be imitated or destroyed by artificial intelligence. The spiritual beings include the beings in heavens. The beings include the aliens in the universe.

We know that all human knowledge arises from the emptiness of the original mind and is inseparable from the Buddha-nature and Tathagata wisdom of the original mind. AI is also created from the Buddha-nature and Tathagata wisdom of humanity. Those who understand this can control and transform AI. Those who do not understand this will be transformed by AI.

The powerful and wealthy in the world claim to have a mission and use various words and deeds to benefit sentient beings, whether the ways are good or bad. Maybe to claim that the mission is from the gods' indication or from something. Beautiful words carry a mission, ugly words are merely a tool. The wise, upon careful reflection, will understand what is being said. Those who understand are humble and kind to all beings. Those who do not understand are arrogant and harm all beings.

A soul practicing within a hierarchical group or organization built on authority might have a slight chance of attaining Arhatship. Unfortunately, in such a group or organization, the chance of attaining Buddhahood is almost nonexistent. Why?

Because in such an environment, the soul is manipulated and controlled by authority and hierarchy, regardless of whether the intentions of these authorities and hierarchical systems are benevolent or malevolent. The nobility of Buddha-nature lies in its liberation from the manipulation and control of all authority and hierarchy, even those authority and hierarchy originating from souls in the void. We might call these gods or demons or ghosts.

In other words, the nobility of Buddha-nature lies in its liberation from the manipulation and control of gods and demons in the void. More profoundly, the nobility of Buddha-nature lies in its independent thinking and the ability to distinguish what is the different between manipulation, control, and teaching.

May all beings understand this: their own Buddha-nature is supremely noble. The Buddha-nature of others is also supremely noble. Equality between self and others is based on Buddha-nature. Knowing this, one can respect oneself and others, value oneself and others, and thus put it into practice. This is the earnest teaching of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas throughout history.

May all beings truly understand supreme wisdom.

May all beings truly understand supreme compassion.

Grateful to all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas of the ten directions for their compassionate teachings and care.

Grateful to all sentient beings of the ten directions for their compassionate protection and guidance.

One of the Ten Titles about Buddha -- Teacher of Heavens and Humans

Author: Tao Qing Hsu

The general meaning of Teacher of Heavens and Humans

The word Teacher of Heavens and Humans is translated from the Chinese and it is translated from the Sanskrit "sasta dena - manusyanam". Generally speaking, it means that the Buddha is good at teaching sentient beings what they should do and what they should not do, as well as what is good and what is not good. If all sentient beings can follow the Buddha's teachings and not deviate from the right path, they will be able to be free from their troubles and to liberate themselves from sufferings of life and death.

The explanation of Teacher of Heavens and Humans said by Buddha

In the Buddhist Scripture--The Scripture of the Ten Titles Said by Buddha, the Buddha explained what the Teacher of Heavens and Humans  meant:

Why was it called the Teacher of Heavens and Humans? The Buddha said. It is not to be the teacher for Ananda of one Bhiksu. All Bhiksus and Bhiksuni. And Upasaka and Upasika. And the heavens and humans. The Srmana and Brahmin. The demon king and the outside Dao. All the heavens of Sakras, Brahmas and Dragons had returned their missions and relied on the teachings to pursue and follow it and all became disciples of the Buddha. It was hence named the Teacher of Heavens and Humans.

Further explanation for Teacher of Heavens and Humans

From this paragraph, we know that the Buddha is the teacher of all beings, no matter these beings are humans or non-humans, no matter they are heaven beings or non-heaven beings, no matter they are monks or nuns, no matter they are residence-scholars or residence-learners in Buddhism,  no matter their status are and no matter they are in the Dao of Buddhism or not in the Dao of Buddhism. That is, no matter what their races, appearances, colors, forms, non-forms, religions, and beliefs are, they all finally return to their missions and rely on the teachings of Buddha. Meanwhile, they finally pursue and follow the teachings of Buddha, and become the disciples of the Buddha.

The explanation of the words in the content

The word Dao is translated from Chinese into English. Dao means path or way. The meaning of Dao is extended to be the truth of practicing in life, belief and religion. Dao is Tao. Bhiksu and Bhiksuni, Upasaka and Upasika, are Sanskrit. Bhiksu and Bhiksuni means monk and nun. In historical India, those who left the home and pursued and practiced the truth of life were called  Bhiksu and Bhiksuni, no matter what their beliefs and religions were. Generally speaking, they did not reside in a fixed place and always stayed under a tree.  And, those who did not leave the home, and pursued and practiced the truth of life at home, were called Upasaka and Upasika. That is, Upasaka is the residence-scholar of male or residence-learner of male. Upasika is the residence-scholar of female or residence-learner of female.

The following explanations for Srmana and Brahmin  are referred to on the Internet. Srmana and Brahmin are Sanskrit. Srmana is a person "who labors, toils, or exerts themselves for some higher or religious purpose" or "seeker, one who performs acts of austerity, ascetic". Brahmin is a varna (caste) within Hindu society. Traditionally, Brahmins are accorded the highest ritual status of the four social classes, and they also served as spiritual teachers.

The heavens of Sakras, Brahmas and Dragons are the beings in heavens according to the records of historical India. According to our current understanding, they are sentient beings belonging to different dimensions of space and time. Meanwhile, they have lifespan and will experience reincarnation after the ending of their life. They have the huge blessings and are in the position of Bodhisattva (Pusa; Bosa).  However, they have not yet achieved Buddhahood. They always do their best to support the teachings of Buddha and to practice Buddhism.

From Buddhist scripture, we can see the Buddha Shakyamuni spoke the Buddha-Law for the heavenly beings.

The Buddha Shakyamuni can be the teacher of humans. There is no doubt. However, from which scripture can we know that the Buddha Shakyamuni can be the teacher of heavenly beings? In some of the Buddhist scripture, it mentioned that the Buddha Shakyamuni was into the state of Zen-steady and went up the heaven to spoke the scripture for the heavenly beings, such as the Buddhist scripture --The Scripture of The Virtue and Merit of The Original Vow of The Bodhisattva Land-Treasure (Pusa Land-Treasure; Pusa Land-Hidden; The treasure is hidden in the land. Pusa is Bodhisattva). The Buddha Shakyamuni went up to the Daoli heaven (Trayastriṃśa) to speak this Buddhist scripture for his mother and the family members. His mother passed away after the Buddha Shakyamuni was born, and then she reincarnated in the Daoli Heaven (Trayastriṃśa) and enjoyed blessings. In other Buddhist scripture, it also mentioned that the Buddha Shakyamuni went up to the Daoli heaven to speak scripture for the heavenly Bodhisattvas (Pusas).

Except for this, in the great-boarding classic scripture, when the Buddha Shakyamuni spoke the scripture, the countless heavenly Pusas and beings, and the countless Pusas who appeared from the different worlds of all Buddhas, would attend the law-congregation to listen to what the spoken and taught by Buddha Shakyamuni. Furthermore, the Buddha Shakyamuni spoke the scripture for kings and his family members of all heavens and the earth. Such as this scripture -- Lotus scripture, there were countless sons of different heavens flown to attend the law-congregation so as to listen to the Buddha’s teaching. Pusa is Bodhisattva. Law-congregation means that the Buddha spoke the Buddha-Law for all beings in one place.

From Buddhist scripture, we can see the Buddha Shakyamuni spoke the Buddha-Law for the king on the earth.

There also exists such a kind of Buddhist scripture that the Buddha Shakyamuni spoke the scripture for the king who lived on earth. As we have mentioned that the word Buddha is just a title. The meaning of Buddha is similar to the saint. That is, they already have good cultivation in moral and ethical aspects. Meanwhile, they are capable to save, teach and reform all beings to liberate them from sufferings of life and death.

In conclusion

From the above explanation, we know why the Buddha was capable of being the teacher of heavens and humans. Please keep following this blog, we will explore more and deeply why the Buddha is the Teacher of Heavens and Humans.

Evil karma would counterattack to oneself in the future.

Author: Tao Qing Hsu (Hsu, Tao-qing)

A lot of people for keeping their life, they had to but being instigated by the blind ideology of patriotism or the other, and thus to kill others. A lot of evil karma has thus been done. They do not know that such evil karma would counterattack to oneself in the future. In other word, if one person kills others with the mind of hatred, one day it would be killed by the hatred mind of other person in the future or in the next life.

That is why the Buddha has said,” What has been done in the past life is the consequence of the current life; what has been done in the present life is the consequence of the afterlife.”

“It is hard to the people when they must die because their lives have to be abandoned.” That is one of the weaknesses of human nature. The self-righteous person would use it to control human beings. People’s livelihood is concerned about the life and death. However, do you have found that the Buddha Sakyamuni did not take part in or play in the rule of game of any worldly system created by human, let alone the ideology of patriotism. Why? Think about it.

Chapter 17: The brightness comes and the darkness disappears (Updated on January 3, 2022)

(Chapter 17) A Brief Talk about The Scripture of Forty-Two Chapters Said by Buddha

Chapter 17: The brightness comes and the darkness disappears

The Buddha said,” Those who see the Dao are as holding a torch into a dark room, where the dark is vanished immediately, yet only the brightness exists. Learning Dao and seeing truth, no-light is vanished immediately, yet the light always exists.”

We have to use our own eyes to see the moon, not others eyes.

When we learn Buddha at different stages, the understanding of the Dao will be different. We have ever mentioned the different stages of the Dao in Chapter 14: Ask about the goodness and grandest.

What the Dao is, which has to be experienced by self. Fortunately, Buddha Sakyamuni has talked and taught us a lot according to his experience, and which gives us a direction to learn. We also have mentioned the Dao in many articles in this blog. Regarding the more profoundly meaning about the Dao, it is not yet mentioned in this blog.

In fact, the Buddhist scripture of 42 chapters said by Buddha is talking about the Dao. Of course, all of the Buddhist scripture is talking about the Dao. The Buddha Sakyamuni said that what he has talked and taught is as like outstretching the arm, and pointing at moon with finger. What it means? If we want to see the moon, the brightness, we have to use our own eyes, not the eyes of Buddha Sakyamuni. What he had done is to tell us where the moon is, why it is the moon, and what we can do to know the moon, when we can see the moon, and how bright it is.

Do you have ever thought why we want to learn or know about the Dao? Does it mean anything to us? If we don’t have any question about it, we would not be interested in that. Only when we have the basic concept about its meaning to us, it would be possible for us to open our mind and to learn Dao further.

The greatest Dao is the speechless. (The grandest Dao is no speech.)

In Buddhism and Daoism, the basic meaning of Dao is the same. Why? The basic meaning of Dao, that is the truth of Dao, is actually practiced and realized by the wise people themselves at the different places and the different time. The truth of Dao is practiced and realized through our experience, but not created by whom.

However, most people do not have such intelligence to realize the truth of Dao, because most of them are repressed by the suffering in life, such as hard working to raise children or to earn money. In ancient time, that is why those who want to seek the truth of Dao would leave their family, which is to give up their worldly life and the burden in life, so as to learn Dao.

Moreover, some of the masters in Buddhism ask their disciples not to read the news and not to contact the outer world, so as to focus their mind to learn Dao. But, in the modern time, I do not suggest you to do that, because the information exchange on the internet is easier to know and obtain, and the AI could replace of many labors, which is also helpful to us to learn Dao.

In fact, Dao is existed everywhere. And it is impossible to gain the Dao by self-excluded from the worldly life or from the outer world. Furthermore, the greatest Dao could not be express by words. That is the greatest Dao is the speechless. It is only when we actually practice, experience and realize the Dao, and the Dao could be seen in the current moment.

The wise human beings in heaven also teach us the truth of Dao.

Except for the practice to learn Dao by self, it would be possible that the truth of Dao is taught and transmitted by the wise human beings in heaven. In other word, the wise human beings in heaven might be the teacher or professor. According to the historical records, there are a lot of different name to call them.

Whatever which name is called, that the wise human beings in heaven have the ability to teach and communicate with the wise persons who practice the Dao on earth is true. Such historical records could be found or read in Chinese Buddhist scripture or in the Chinese documents of Daoism, or any historical documents in Chinese. Such teaching is very positive and helpful to human life.

There is the evil spirits in heaven and is able to control human beings on earth.

In fact, no matter whether people learn Dao or not, the human beings in heaven are able to teach and communicate with them. However, the content what is taught might be different. And some of them might be not good for the human beings on earth.

According to the Chinese Buddhist scripture, the demon in heaven is able to spoil the Buddhism purposely. But, it maybe not be called demon. It is possible to be another name to be called. Such as the spy, we may not know who the spy is, what its real name is, and how it manipulates us. However, it may be around us, or to be our friend, or partner, or colleague.

Demon is also one of the human beings in heaven. In other words, there are the evil spirits in heaven, who could manipulate the human beings on earth and teach them to do the evil things so as to spoil the harmony in the society or in the country of human beings on earth.

According to our experience, thinking, reasoning and judgment, could it be possible to be true? If it is true, what we should do and what we have the choice? And how we could get rid of the control from the demon in heaven?

How could we get rid of the control from the evil spirit in heaven?

In this part, Buddha Sakyamuni also teaches us a lot. In a brief, that is to learn Dao of Buddhism and keep the positive and right thinking as taught by Buddha Sakyamuni. Why? Do you think, could it be possible for evil spirit to control or manipulate emptiness or nothingness?

For example, if we have and persist in love and desire in our mind, it would be possible for us to be manipulated by anyone who makes use of the love and desire in our mind. If there is no love and desire in our mind, that is nothingness in mind, how could it be possible for demon to manipulate us by making use of the love and desire? That is also one of the reasons that Buddha Sakyamuni wants us to know that we could see Dao, if we could abandon the love and desire.

Understanding this and to abandon the love and desire, our heart of empathy and of equality for all sentient beings would be generated gradually. That is the true love for all sentient beings. The prospect of our life is thus actually lighted. That is true brightness in our life and future.

When people are willing to take time to realize and practice the truth of life or of the universe, that is to learn and practice the Dao, it would be possible for everyone to see the Dao someday. Therefore, the truth of Dao is not the patent which should be belonged to whom, but it could be gained by everyone.

What is the difference between doing goodness and learning Dao?

Secondly, even the human beings in heaven, most of them do not know what the truth of Dao. In Buddhist scripture, Buddha Sakyamuni also teaches Buddhism for the human beings in heaven; that is to teach them to learn Dao. Why? A lot of human beings in heaven are reincarnated from the human beings on earth; that is because they have done a lot of goodness, but have not yet to learn Dao, let alone to know what the truth of Dao.

It is easier for us to do goodness, because it might let us have a good feeling for the value of our existence and might make us happy or to have the obviously feedback from any person who is helped by us. Moreover, we always have the concept that we could go into heaven to enjoy the bliss, if we could do goodness in current life.

Learning the Dao and practicing the Dao seems not to be the same thing, but, it is truly the same thing finally. If you have ever read the Chapter 2: Cutting off the desire and no demanding, or you have ever read a lot of articles in this blog, you might have the basic concept about the truth of Dao.

Do you have ever thought what the difference between learning Dao and doing goodness would be? Many people think that doing goodness is learning Dao. I cannot say it is wrong, because doing goodness is the basic to learn Dao. But, the meaning of Dao is broader.

Practicing the Dao is able to see the Dao, which makes our life brightness.

Furthermore, do you have ever thought what the true helpful to our real life, if we learn Dao or see the Dao? If it could not help our life in reality, why we learn Dao? If you have ever read a lot of articles in this blog, you might have the basic concept about why we learn Dao.

Many people think that it is useless to learn Dao, because they do not know how it could be helpful to their real life, such as to have a job to earn money or to have meals in life. This is a very real problem. Actually, it is the suffering in life. Buddha Sakyamuni had answered a lot to resolve such problem, and had blessing a lot for those people who are willing to learn Dao.

To learn and practice the Dao is to learn and practice the wisdom, especially to inspire the natural wisdom in our self. We have mentioned such concept in Chapter 15: Ask about the force and brightness. And there is the answer for this problem.

There is the shallow or the deep meaning for the Dao. No matter it is, once we have seen the Dao, it would light our life, even if it is only a slight light, which could become the great light someday and make our whole life in the present and future life be in the brightness.

Supplementary note: Dao is transliterated from Chinese, meaning way and method, deeper meaning as a system of learning or religion.

p.s. Dao is Tao, which is transliterated from Chinese. The original meaning of Dao is the way and path, and it is extended to be the truth of life that we can learn and practice in our lives.
